Got the grand prize in the taste of home mag. Sounds really good.

1 tsp garlic salt
1 teas. garlic salt
1 lb ground beef
1 lb bulk pork sausage
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 cup refried beans
8 flour torillas [ 8 inch] warmed
3 cups shredded Monterey jack cheese

In a large sauce pan, melt butter. Stir in flour until smooth, gradually add water. Bring to a boil, cook and stir for 1 minute or until thickened. Stir in chili powder and garlic salt. Bring to a boil, Reduce heat, simmer , uncovered for 10 minutes. set aside, [ I bet this sauce would be good over tamales] Irene
In large skillet over medium heat, cook the beef, sausage and onion until meat is no longer pink, drain. Stir in refried beans, heat through.
Spread 1/4 cup sauce in greased 13 in by 9 in baking dish. Spread 1 Tbsp sauce over each torilla, place 2/3 cup meat mixture down the center of each. Top each with 1/4 cup cheese. Roll up and place seam side down in prepared dish. Pour remaining sauce over the top, sprinkle with remaining cheese.
Bake uncovered, at 350 for 18-22 minutes or untill bubbly and cheese is melted. Serve with optional toppings if desired. { green onions, chopped black olives ] on top.

I made these last night, I had a little trouble thickning the sauce, I think just a hair more flour would help. They call for 1/4 cup, I added another tablespoon of flour. Also I did not have garlic salt so used garlic powder and added some salt. I think garlic salt would have been the better choice and no salt. But all in all very good. Now I don't know about chicken as that does not have the flavor of sausage and beef, could come out a little flat.
I will use that sauce recipe for my tamales now, I love tamales and in resturants they always have a chili gravy on them, and this does taste like the resturants gravy.
