Herb Garden/Tea

Postby Alegria » Sun Feb 07, 2010 9:06 pm

I grew chamomile and peppermint last year and am currently sipping a cup of tea from the dried bits. Ahhhhhhhh..

What else would be good to grow for herbal teas?

I also grow spearmint, Blue Balsam mint, various flavored mints (such as apple, chocolate, and pineapple), lemon balm, bee balm, and horehound. (The kids like the horehound for tea, but I really planted it as a medicinal) We also use raspberry and blueberry leaves for tea. They're also medicinal, as are most of my teas.

Really dumb question - do you just dry the leaves and crumble a few in the cup. Or do I need one of those tea strainer thingies? I have the mints and have raspberries started, so just dry some leaves in the dehydrator?

What is raspberry tea used medicinally for? I have some boughten raspberry tea I like when I have a cold or sore throat. It seems to make me feel better or am I just imagining it? Or is it the honey I put in it?

I don't know about the raspberry tea, but I can tell you what we do for tea. I make a pot with 2 heaping teaspoons of whatever combination of dried herbs I have on hand. I just put them loose in the pot, add boiling water & steep for a few minutes. Then I pour through a cup size strainer into the cups. I sweeten with honey.

I hang dry my herbs in the kitchen on the beams.

I make my tea the same way Cheryl does.

Raspberry leaves are used for menstrual problems, congestion, coughs, and intestinal complaints (diarrhea). I mostly use it for bronchitis. I get that a lot because of my asthma.

We love stinging nettle tea so I dry a lot of that. I also dried lettuce and it is nice but a little bitter, and is supposed to help a person sleep. A good use for lettuce that gets too big before it can be used in salads.

Rose hips for vit C, and pain relief, yaupon holly for caffeine and bronchial dilator. I use orange peels too. Put the fresh peel in a cup and pour hot water over and let it steep, add some to regular tea. One orange can make several nice cups of tea. Parsley for edema and blood pressure.
