Gonna be trout fishing soon

Postby flannelman » Sun Jan 31, 2010 1:19 pm

Well hunting season is pretty much over and it is still too cold for me to really get into lake fishing so I'll just go below the dam and trout fish till it warms up some more. My son has been after me for months about going fishing and this should fit the bill. All I need is a trout lic. and some colored mini-marshmallows and we are in business. I'll post some pics when we go.

Sounds like fun. Please do post some photos.

i take it that fishermen in arkansas rely on a diet of marshmallows for luck ?

Gotta say, the marshmellows are a good tip. Jimmy Jacobs ommitted that little secret in his book, "Tailwater Trout in the South." I am going to try tailwater trout fishing this year. Any particular dams in AR you recommned? Advice on tackle to acquire. I am starting from scratch here. All I own are a few memories of watching Dad practice his casting technique in the backyard. He sure made it look easier than it was. Well, gonna try it anyway. I figure the worst I can do is invest in a reason to spend the day near the water. Love to see your pics.

Read the Arkansas chapter today in Jacobs book on Tailwater Trout Fising in the South. He did mention marshmallows, flannelman. I got the idea that they mimic fish eggs. Or do trout like smores?

Looks like the White River system has the best tailwater fishing. And who knew that Arkansas has the best tailwater trout fishing anywhere. So nice to be first in something!

Trout fishing is my favorite. Unfortunately, Texas has very very little of it. And only when certain lakes and streams are stocked temporarily. We do get up to SE Oklahoma now and then to do some, and as a child, I remember trout fishing in Colorado, and once at Roaring River in Missouri. We used Velveeta up there with some success, as I recall. Never used marshmallows.

Velveeta, huh? Catfish I can understand liking Velveeta, but trout? Trout? I'd think they'd be more epicurean, preferring something like Guyere:)

Nah. As it turned out, Missouri trouts are rednecks.

The cold water tends to keep the stuff pretty firm. You can't whip the line too hard, just sorta toss it out there and let it float down to where the trout are hanging out. Been a long time, but I do remember catching bunches of them redneck trout. I think they'd turn their snouts up at a nice French brie 8)

Thanks for the primer, Steve. I'll try it on Arkansas trout. I can't imagine them being more discriminating than their Missouri cousins.

Im primarily a fly fisherman. But have caught rainbows on kernel corn and some of the white mepps rooster tail jigs.

Steve I have not gone yet. But I have a son that lives in Kerrville and I understand that there is trout fishing in section of the Guadalupe is there not? I believe its in the Canyon Trailrace areas.

Absolutely!

Lots of fisherman go for largemouth Florida hybrid bass with fly rigs also. I watched a guy in our cove catch 4 nice ones in the stretch of 45 minutes once.

Hey sorry bout not getting back to you sooner but I been busy. We got to go once and didn't have any luck that evening. I need to go again to see if we can do better. It is warming up here and other fish are biting. The White river and Little Red are the best trout fisheries in the state! I live near Hot Springs so my closest trout water is the tail-water below Blakely dam or the tail-water below Carpenter dam. You can usually get a limit quickly at either place. I use size 6 or 8 treble hooks with a bait holder spring on the shank. Just squish half a mini marshmallow on and you are ready to go.
